Tree houses
or tree forts, are platforms or buildings
constructed around, next to or among the trunk or branches of one or more
mature trees while above ground level. Tree houses can be used for recreation,
work space, habitation, observation or as temporary retreats. Above floor level
a tree house is built in a similar way to a ground-based building, such as a
playhouse or shed. The main difference in construction is below the floor,
where there are tree-specific requirements. The support system consists of a
framework under the floor surface, made up of beams and joists, and the
physical attachments to the tree. These parts must be strong enough to carry
the load of the tree house and anyone inside, along with potential snow loads
and a safety factor. If the tree house is attached to more than one tree or
branch, the supports must allow for movement between the various attachment
points, otherwise storm damage is likely. Source
